Early Life and Education
Born into a musical family in Cali, Colombia, Santiago Velasco Llanos began his musical journey at a young age. His father, a trumpeter in the city's orchestra, fostered his son's talent. By the age of 12, Velasco Llanos had composed his first piece, a piano waltz, which attracted the attention of RCA Victor. His early compositions were recorded under the pseudonym Pepe del Mar.
Musical Studies
In 1933, Velasco Llanos enrolled in the newly established Cali Conservatory, where he simultaneously pursued his studies and taught music at a local high school. He graduated from the conservatory in 1941 and continued his education at the University of Chile's music faculty, where he studied under renowned composers Domingo Santa Cruz and Pedro Humberto Allende.
Academic and Professional Career
After graduating from the university in 1947, Velasco Llanos taught there for a year before returning to Colombia. From 1950 to 1953, he served as director of the National Conservatory in Bogotá, where he taught composition and music history.
Contributions to Colombian Music
Velasco Llanos played a pivotal role in the development of Colombian music. In 1952, he established the commission that assembled the Colombian Symphony Orchestra. He also invited Estonian conductor Olav Roots to Colombia, who greatly contributed to the training of national musicians.
Leading Choirs and Compositions
Velasco Llanos led various choral ensembles throughout his career, including at the Cali Conservatory. His compositions include a Symphony for String Orchestra (1966), choral works, and piano pieces that often leaned towards neoclassicism.
