However, Chief Inspector Kerrin Smith of the North Yorkshire Police stated outside the courtroom that many questions remained unanswered despite the lengthy police investigation.

Catt pleaded guilty in accordance with Section 58 of the Offences Against the Person Act of 1861, which theoretically carries a maximum punishment of life imprisonment. Roger described his daughter-in-law as a "lovely woman" and said that the crime "doesn't fit in with her character at all." He continued, "She has two lovely children whom she adores...
