SASH!
SASH! is an iconic German electronic music project formed in the 1990s. The project is the brainchild of several musicians, DJs, and producers, but the public largely associates SASH! with its frontman, DJ Sascha Lappessen.
Early Life and Career
Sascha Lappessen developed a passion for playing keyboards but initially worked as a waiter at the "Kings" club. Captivated by the club scene, he transitioned into a lighting technician and eventually a club musician. Lappessen recorded his debut single, "Careka - Indian Rave," but it went unnoticed due to lack of funding.
Formation and Breakthrough
In 1995, Lappessen encountered renowned DJs Ralph "Cappi" Kappmeier and Thomas "Alisson" Allison, who had gained fame under the name MINNESOTA with their remake of 4 NON BLONDES' "What's Up?" Together, they formed the production team SASH! and released the single "It's My Life" in 1996, establishing themselves as a prolific remix group. SASH! created remixes for renowned artists such as 2 UNLIMITED, SPACE FROG, Dr. Alban, and Jean-Michel Jarre.
International Success
In the autumn of 1996, the trio met Sabine Ohms. Her vocals on the track "Encore Une Fois" became the signature sound of SASH!'s first international hit. The song was intended as a continuation of "It's My Life," but it surpassed all expectations, reaching number two on the UKチャート and selling half a million copies across Europe. Ironically, the single failed to make the top 20 in Germany, despite the country's thriving techno and trance scene.
Changing Vocals and Legal Battles
SASH! adopted the strategy of featuring different vocalists for each new single. Sabine Ohms went on to form her own group, ENCORE!, while DJ Rodrigues from Argentina became the new frontman for SASH!'s single "Ecuador." Despite the group's commercial success, they were plagued by accusations of plagiarism. "Encore Une Fois" and "Stay" came under fire, with the latter resulting in a lengthy lawsuit with English DJ Andrew Hagerty, who claimed that his 1996 track "Durrel" was used in its creation.
Continuous Success
In 1998, SASH! released "La Primavera" from their second album, "Life Goes On." The song peaked at number three on the UK chart, followed by the even more successful "Mysterious Times." Their album sold millions of copies, earning gold status in various countries. In 2000, "Just Around The Hill" featuring Tina Cousins became one of SASH!'s biggest hits.
Later Years and Legacy
SASH! experienced a resurgence in 2002 with the release of their album "S4! SASH!." The single "Run" featuring Boy George became a major hit. In 2003, they released "I Believe" in both original and remixed versions. The project remains an influential force in electronic music, with a vast discography that has sold over 20 million copies worldwide.
