Childhood and Early Life
On March 4, 1940 (or a day later, according to some sources), Sava Kirilov Hashimov was born in Pleven, Bulgaria, to the Hashimov family. From a young age, he excelled academically, earning a gold medal upon graduating from high school. He initially pursued a degree in chemical technology and metallurgy in Sofia but soon discovered his passion for acting. After completing his second year, he transferred to the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts (NATFA) in Sofia.
Theatre Career
At NATFA, Hashimov studied under renowned directors Metodi Andonov and Stefan Sarchadzhiev. After graduating in 1963, he joined the Burgas Theatre and later became a member of the Ivan Vazov National Theatre in 1964. He spent 43 seasons performing at this prestigious theater, showcasing his versatility in over 100 stage roles. Notable performances included Hamlet in "Hamlet," Konstantin Treplyov in "The Seagull," and Alexander Aduyev in "The Ordinary Story." His portrayal of Repetilov in "Woe from Wit" earned him the title of "Best Actor" in 1986.
Film Career
Hashimov made his film debut in the 1960s with "The Legend of Paisii." He played a pianist in the romantic drama "Running on Waves" (1967), which marked a turning point in his career. He also appeared in several Bulgarian and Soviet films, including "The Tsar Ivan Shishman," "Till You Find Me Again," and "Lenko."
Personal Life
While filming "Running on Waves" in the picturesque town of Nessebar, Hashimov met Russian actress Margarita Terekhova. They fell in love and got married in 1967. They had a daughter, Anna Terekhova. Despite the couple's initial happiness, their marriage was strained by the practicalities of living in Moscow, where Hashimov struggled to find work as an actor. He returned to Bulgaria, where he continued his successful career on stage and screen.
Later Life and Death
Hashimov remained an active member of the Ivan Vazov National Theatre until 2006, when he retired due to health reasons. He passed away on January 11, 2012, after suffering a stroke. He is remembered as a talented actor and a devoted father.
