Early Life and Education
Sayako Kuroda, formerly known as Princess Nori, was born as the third child and only daughter of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan. She graduated from Gakushuin University in 1992 with a degree in Japanese Language and Literature.
Ornithological Career
After completing her studies, Sayako Kuroda joined the Yamashina Institute for Ornithology as a research fellow. She later obtained the position of researcher in 1998. She is the author of several articles and academic publications on ornithology.
Marriage and Departure from the Imperial Family
In 2004, the Imperial Household Agency announced Sayako Kuroda's engagement to Yoshiki Kuroda, an urban designer working for the Tokyo city government. They were married on November 15, 2005, at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo.
Following her marriage, Sayako Kuroda left the Imperial Family and adopted her husband's surname, in accordance with the Imperial House Law of 1947. This law prohibits female members of the Imperial Family from retaining their status upon marrying commoners. She received a one-time monetary compensation at the time of her wedding.
Post-Marriage Life
After her marriage, Sayako Kuroda left her job as an ornithologist to focus on her family and potential motherhood. While she is no longer entitled to an imperial stipend, she reportedly received a dowry of $1.3 million from the Imperial Household Agency.
