Biography of Scatman Crothers

Scatman Crothers was an American actor, singer, dancer, and musician. Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, Crothers began his musical journey at the age of 15, playing drums in a local band. However, drums were not the only instrument he excelled at; Crothers had a talent for a variety of musical instruments. He eventually went on tour across the country, even performing for Al Capone at one point.

The Origin of the Name "Scatman"

In 1932, Crothers landed a job at WSMK radio station in Dayton, Ohio. However, the director felt that his name wasn't catchy enough, so Crothers quickly came up with the pseudonym "Scatman." Interestingly, Crothers didn't learn to sing in the scat style until later in his career.

Introduction to Film and Television

Crothers made his film debut in 1953 in the movie "Meet Me at the Fair." He went on to appear in both film and television productions, initially in smaller roles. His first major supporting role came in 1970 in the Disney animated film "The Aristocats," where he provided the voice for Scat Cat and performed the famous song "Ev'rybody Wants to be a Cat."

Friendship with Jack Nicholson

Crothers was a close friend of Jack Nicholson, and they appeared together in several films, including "The King of Marvin Gardens," "The Fortune," "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," and "The Shining," directed by Stanley Kubrick.

Success in Voice Acting

Crothers found success in voice acting, particularly after his role in "The Aristocats." He was known for his talent in various animated projects and was also invited to appear in popular TV shows like "Charlie's Angels," "Starsky and Hutch," and "Magnum, P.I." In the 1980s, Crothers voiced the character Jazz in the animated series "The Transformers," a role that remains iconic among fans.

Musical Career

Throughout his musical career, Crothers primarily played drums and piano. He gained the most recognition as a member of Slim Gaillard's band. He also had solo performances and recorded several albums and singles. Crothers was a dedicated smoker, and unfortunately, this habit led to his demise. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in late 1985 but continued to perform. Crothers passed away on November 22, 1986, due to pneumonia caused by the spread of cancer throughout his body.
