Early Life and Career
Scott Morrison, an American fashion designer, was born and raised in Palm Springs, California. He attended the University of Washington in Seattle on a golf scholarship. His interest in fashion blossomed during his golfing career, and after a stint as a professional golfer, Morrison gained hands-on experience in the garment business, starting from the ground up as an assistant to Seattle-based designer Derek Andrew.
Success with Mudd Jeans and Paper Denim & Cloth
In 1998, at the age of 25, Morrison became design director of the newly created Mudd Jeans division in New York City. The parent company, Jack Jeans, struggled to find its niche in the denim market. In an effort to revive the failing Jack Jeans concept, Morrison developed a new line of American-made denim that could compete with brands like Diesel and Replay.
His vision was realized in 1999 when Jack Jeans was discontinued and the parent company invested in Morrison's new concept, Paper Denim & Cloth. Over the next four years at Paper Denim & Cloth, Morrison established his reputation in the fashion industry. As co-founder and designer, he helped transform the brand into one of the world's leading denim labels.
Collaboration and Artistic Inspiration
Inspired by the brand's rapid growth, Morrison began to incorporate other areas of his personal and cultural interests into the expanding lifestyle concept. Paper Denim & Cloth collaborated with artists and designers, resulting in limited-edition collections that were the first of their kind, showcasing the work of emerging artists such as Faile and Bast. Additionally, Morrison published a limited-edition monograph on the work of emerging underground artists titled "Boredom 2003," merging his two passions: underground art and innovative design.
Launch of Earnest Sewn
After five years with the company that had become one of the greatest American success stories in denim, Morrison decided to venture out on his own. His new endeavor was a dual design concept encompassing the brands Earnest Sewn and An Earnest Cut & Sew. Both are built on Morrison's obsession with quality, originality, and innovation, combined with two different vintage aesthetics.
Aesthetics and Design Philosophy
Earnest Sewn celebrates the legacy of American denim while embracing the Japanese aesthetic concept of wabi-sabi, which holds that perfection lies in imperfection. These themes are ever-present in Earnest Sewn collections, expressed through Morrison's classic designs and meticulous attention to detail. Earnest Sewn stands as a testament to the enduring power of beauty and tradition in our ever-changing world.
Personal Life and Current Work
Scott Morrison currently resides in Woodstock, New York, and New York City. While he enjoys spending time woodworking in his workshop or fly-fishing on the Esopus Creek, he primarily focuses on designing menswear and womenswear collections in his New York office. His partners at Earnest Sewn are longtime friends and muses Lori Jacobs and Eleanor Lembo.
