Early Life and Exploration
Sebastian Cabot, the renowned Italian navigator and explorer, was born in either Venice or Bristol. His father, John Cabot, was also a skilled mariner who undertook expeditions to the Americas. Sebastian joined his father on the second voyage in 1498, aiming to discover a passage to the Pacific Ocean.
Expeditions and Discoveries
Cabot's explorations led him to the La Plata estuary, where he encountered members of Juan de Solis's expedition. In search of treasures, he sailed up the Uruguay River, reaching as far as the Apipe waterfalls on the Paraná River. He established a fort and descended the Paraguay River to the Bermejo River.
Return and Exiled
In 1530, Cabot returned to Seville, but was exiled to Oran in Africa for three years. Nevertheless, his passion for exploration did not wane. Upon his return, he published a world map in 1544.
Settlement in England
With the accession of King Edward VI in 1547, Cabot relocated to England, where he received a pension. He established and led the Muscovy Trading Company in London in 1551, which organized expeditions to find the Northeast Passage in 1553-1556.
Legacy
Sebastian Cabot's contributions to maritime exploration were immense. He charted new territories, founded settlements, and played a pivotal role in the development of trade and commerce. His legacy lives on through the discoveries he made and the inspiration he provided to future explorers.
