Early Life and Military Career
Born into a working-class family in Ukraine, Konstantin Ivanovich Getman joined the Bolshevik Party in 1922. After graduating from the Poltava Infantry Courses, he enlisted in the Red Army in 1920. He participated in the Russian Civil War and subsequently held various positions in the Air Force.
Pre-World War II Service
Getman graduated from the 3rd Military Aviation School for Pilots and Aerial Observers in 1929 and the Advanced Training Courses for Commanding Staff at the Zhukovsky Air Force Military Academy in 1934. He also attended the 1st Military Aviation School for Pilots in 1935. In 1936, he received the Order of the Badge of Honor for his achievements in combat, political, and technical training.
World War II
At the outbreak of World War II in 1941, Getman commanded the 4th Light Bombardment Aviation Regiment. The regiment was tasked with conducting troop trials of the new Il-2 ground-attack aircraft. In June, the regiment became the first in the Red Army Air Force to receive 17 Il-2s and began mastering their use.
Baptism of Fire
On June 27, 1941, the 4th Ground Attack Aviation Regiment flew its first combat mission, carrying out a bombing and strafing attack on a column of German tanks and infantry on the Slucksk highway near the Berezina River. This marked the combat debut of the Il-2 aircraft.
Distinguished Service
Throughout the war, Getman's regiment distinguished itself in numerous air battles and bombing missions. He held various commands and rose to the rank of Major General of Aviation. For his bravery and leadership, Getman was awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union medal, two Orders of Lenin, four Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of Suvorov 2nd Class, the Order of Kutuzov 2nd Class, the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky 2nd Class, two Orders of the Patriotic War 1st Class, the Order of the Red Star, and the Badge of Honor, among other medals.
Post-War Career
After the war, Getman continued to serve in the Air Force until his retirement. He devoted his later years to writing and sharing his experiences of the war.
