Semih Kaplanoğlu: From Advertising to Acclaimed Filmmaker
Early Life and EducationBorn in a small town in Turkey, Semih Kaplanoğlu developed a passion for storytelling at a young age. He pursued his love of cinema at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Cinema and Television at the Dokuz Eylul University.
Transition to Istanbul and Advertising Career
In 1984, Kaplanoğlu moved to Istanbul and began his career in the advertising industry. He worked as a copywriter for renowned agencies such as Güzelsanatlar, Saatchi & Saatchi, and Young & Rubicam.
Entry into Filmmaking
Kaplanoğlu's journey into filmmaking began as an assistant cameraman on two award-winning documentaries. Soon after, he wrote the screenplay for a successful 52-episode television series aired on Show TV and InterStar.
Directorial Debut and International Recognition
Kaplanoğlu's directorial debut, "Herkes Kendi Evinde" (Alone at Home), garnered several awards and international festival screenings. His second film, "Meleğin Düşüşü" (The Fall of the Angel), premiered at the 2006 Berlin International Film Festival, captivating critics and audiences alike. "Yumurta" (Egg), his third feature film, received international accolades for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.
Triumph at Berlin and Legacy
In 2010, Semih Kaplanoğlu's film "Bal" (Honey) won the coveted Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, solidifying his status as a master filmmaker. His thought-provoking and meditative cinema continues to inspire and resonate with audiences worldwide.
