Sergei Borodaevsky: An Economic and Cooperative Pioneer
Born in Akhtyrka, Kharkiv Governorate, Sergei Borodaevsky's academic pursuits began in 1893 with his graduation from Kharkiv University's law faculty. In 1895, he served at the District Court of Tiflis before relocating to St. Petersburg in 1896.
Service and Advocacy
While serving at the State Bank, Borodaevsky focused on organizing small-scale credit. His influence extended to various government bodies, including the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, where he assisted in managing the Trade Department. As a member of the Central Committee for Small Credit, he actively participated in addressing the needs of the agricultural industry. Additionally, he held the position of Vice Chairman of the St. Petersburg branch of the Agricultural Cooperative Committee.
Political Engagements
Upon his return to Ukraine in 1918, Borodaevsky became Deputy Minister of Commerce and Industry under the government of Hetman Pavlo Skoropadsky. He played a crucial role in drafting and signing Ukraine's treaties with Georgia (1918) and the Central Powers (1918).
Exile and Continued Contributions
Amidst the political turmoil of the Ukrainian People's Republic, Borodaevsky carried out government assignments. In 1919, he moved to Odessa, where he played an influential role in establishing national cooperative institutions. He also taught at the Odessa Polytechnic Institute.
In 1919, Borodaevsky was forced to emigrate to Istanbul and later to Paris. Through his lectures at the Brussels International Academy and the Russian Department of Sorbonne, he shared his insights on cooperative history and theory.
International Cooperativism
From 1923 onward, Borodaevsky's base of operations was Czechoslovakia, where he actively participated in the international cooperative movement. His publications, translated into multiple languages, disseminated his knowledge and expertise throughout the world.
