Early Life and Career
Sergei Torres was born on January 20, 1987, in Sancti Spíritus, Cuba. He began his canoeing career in 2005 and quickly became a member of the Cuban national team.
International Success
In 2005, Torres made his mark on the world stage at the World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. He won a bronze medal in the C-2 200m and 1000m, and a silver medal in the C-2 500m. He continued his success in 2007, earning a silver medal in the C-2 1000m at the World Championships in Duisburg, Germany.
Torres also dominated at the Pan American Games. In 2007, he won two gold medals in the C-2 500m and 1000m at the games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He added another gold medal in the C-2 1000m at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Olympic Experience
Torres made his Olympic debut at the 2008 Beijing Games. He competed in the C-2 500m and 1000m with Karel Aguilar Chacón, finishing sixth in the 500m and ninth in the 1000m.
In 2012, Torres qualified for the London Olympics with José Carlos Bulnes. They reached the final in the C-2 1000m, but finished sixth.
Continued Success
Despite not medaling at the London Olympics, Torres remained a force in international canoeing. In 2014, he won two gold medals at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz, Mexico, in the C-1 1000m and C-2 1000m. He also won a bronze medal in the C-2 500m at the World Championships in Moscow.
In 2015, Torres earned another bronze medal at the Pan American Games in Toronto, this time in the C-2 1000m.
Olympic Gold
The pinnacle of Torres' career came at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He teamed up with Fernando Jorge to win the gold medal in the C-2 1000m. This historic triumph was Torres' first Olympic medal and made him a national hero in Cuba.
