Early Life and Education
Burkitbayev attended the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI) and graduated in 1980 with a degree in Engineering Physics. He then pursued a postgraduate degree at MEPhI.
Academic Career
From 1984 to 1993, Burkitbayev worked at the Institute of Chemistry of Oil and the Institute of Mathematics, both within the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan.
Business and Telecommunications
In 1993, Burkitbayev entered the production sector, holding leadership positions at the Almaty Engineering Center for Laser Technology, the Kazakhstan Radio Technical Plant, and telecommunications companies such as Kazinformtelecom, Kazakhstan Telecommunications (KATELCO), and Kazakhtelecom.
Political Career
From 1998 to 2000, Burkitbayev served as Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Subsequently, from 2000 to 2002, he was an Advisor to the President of Kazakhstan.
Oil and Gas Industry
Burkitbayev later became the Director of the Kazakh Institute of Oil and Gas. On January 10, 2007, he was appointed Assistant to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
KazMunaiGas Presidency
In February 2008, Burkitbayev became the Chairman of the Board of the National Scientific and Technological Holding "Samruk." On May 29, 2008, he was elected President (Chairman of the Board) of KazMunaiGas, but was relieved of his position three months later.
Arrest and Conviction
In September 2008, Burkitbayev was arrested on corruption charges. In 2009, he was sentenced to 6 years in prison in a general regime colony.
Release and Pardon
Burkitbayev was released on November 16, 2012, after completing his sentence. His release was not publicly announced. He later applied for early release due to good behavior, which was granted by the Zerendi District Court.
Awards
Burkitbayev received the Jubilee Medal "300 Years of the Russian Navy."
