Life and Career
Seth Binzer: Frontman of Crazy TownSeth Binzer (born May 25, 1974) was an American musician best known as the frontman and co-founder of the rap-rock band Crazy Town. Binzer was also known by the stage name Shifty Shellshock.
Formation of Crazy Town
In 1992, Binzer met Brett Mazur, and they began collaborating as The Sriggers Brimstone. By early 1999, they had formed Crazy Town. The band was set to perform on the Ozzfest tour in 2000 but was forced to leave two weeks in after Binzer was arrested for throwing a chair out of a window.
The band's single "Butterfly," based on the Red Hot Chili Peppers' track "Pretty Little Ditty," reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. As a result, their debut album, "The Gift of Game," sold over 1.5 million copies. Their follow-up album, "Darkhorse," was a commercial failure in comparison, and Crazy Town disbanded shortly after its release. The band reunited in 2007 and performed live for the first time in five years in August 2009. They released their third studio album, "The Brimstone Sluggers," in 2015.
Solo Career
During Crazy Town's hiatus, Binzer collaborated with British producer and musician Paul Oakenfold, providing vocals for Oakenfold's song "Starry Eyed Surprise." The track was for Oakenfold's debut solo studio album, "Bunkka." Binzer released his debut solo album, "Happy Love Sick," in 2004. He released two singles from the album: "Slide Along Side," which was a pan-European hit for Shifty, reaching number 29 in the UK and charting moderately in Italy, France, Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland. His next single, "Turning Me On," was less successful, failing to chart.
Shifty & The Big Shots
In 2010, Binzer fronted the group Shifty & The Big Shots. They released their debut single, "Save Me," on July 6, 2010, and followed with the single "City of Angels."
Personal Life
Binzer married Melissa Clark in 2002. They had one son, Halo. In 2011, Clark filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. Binzer had a relationship with a woman named Tracy in 2008. They had a son named Gage.
Binzer began a relationship with Jasmine Lennard in 2010. On March 27, 2011, police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance between the couple. In a video interview with TMZ, Binzer stated that the disturbance was merely a noise complaint and that the outstanding warrant was issued for retaliating against a security guard who had used excessive force when trying to remove him from a club. Lennard and Binzer announced their engagement in 2012. Binzer was arrested for cocaine possession in February 2012 and sentenced to three years probation; his relationship with Lennard ended soon after. Binzer and Lennard had a son together named Phoenix. In 2013, Lennard filed for exclusive custody of their son in a California court, alleging that Binzer had smoked crack in front of him and once left a crack pipe in his room.
Hospitalization and Coma
On March 29, 2012, Seth Binzer was hospitalized after being found unconscious. He was released from the hospital after coming out of a coma.
Death
On June 24, 2024, at the age of 49, Binzer was found dead in his Los Angeles home.
