Early Life and Education
Born in Kent, Connecticut, Seth MacFarlane attended Kent School, where he faced criticism for his "stupid" humor. Undeterred, he pursued animation studies at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he created the short film "The Life of Larry," which would later serve as the inspiration for "Family Guy."
Professional Beginnings
After graduating, MacFarlane joined Hanna-Barbera Productions and worked as an animator and writer for Cartoon Network's "Cartoon Cartoons" series, which included shows like "Johnny Bravo," "Dexter's Laboratory," and "Cow and Chicken." He also wrote for the animated series "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective."
In 1996, MacFarlane created a sequel to "The Life of Larry" called "Larry and Steve," which featured a bumbling middle-aged man named Larry and his highly intelligent dog, Steve. The series aired on Cartoon Network and World Premiere Toons.
The Birth of "Family Guy"
Impressed by the "Larry" shorts, Fox producers approached MacFarlane to create a series based on the characters. In 1998, "Family Guy" debuted, featuring MacFarlane voicing the lead roles of Peter Griffin, Brian Griffin, Stewie Griffin, Glenn Quagmire, and Tom Tucker. His voice for Brian is nearly identical to his own speaking voice.
"American Dad!"
In 2005, MacFarlane premiered his follow-up series, "American Dad!," after the 39th Super Bowl. The show revolves around the Smith family, with Stan Smith as a hyper-conservative CIA agent, who lives with his family, an alien who saved his life, and a talking goldfish with the transplanted brain of an East German Olympic skier. MacFarlane voices Stan and Roger in the series.
Other Projects
MacFarlane is an avid fan of "Star Trek" and appeared as Ensign Rivers in episodes of "Enterprise." He has also guest-starred in "The War at Home" and given guest lectures at Harvard University and George Washington University.
Awards and Recognition
MacFarlane has won numerous awards for his work, including:2 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Voice Characterization for Stewie Griffin in "Family Guy"
