Biography of Sherry North

Sherry North, an American actress, singer, and dancer, was born as Dawn Shirley Crang in Los Angeles, California. Her mother, June, worked as a realtor. At the age of ten, during World War II, she was already performing in the show "USO." When she was fifteen, she married Fred Bessire, and at sixteen, she became a mother. Despite being a young mother, Sherry continued to perform in nightclubs under the stage name Shirley May Bessire.

Early Career

While performing at the "Macayo" club in Santa Monica, Sherry caught the attention of a professional choreographer. Shortly after, she received an invitation to play a small role in the 1953 film "Here Comes the Girls" starring Bob Hope. During this time, Dawn decided to change her stage name to Sherry North and made her Broadway debut in the musical "Hazel Flagg," which earned her the prestigious "Theatre World" award. She later reprised her role in the film adaptation of the play, "Living It Up."

Rise to Fame

In 1954, Sherry North signed a contract with 20th Century Fox. The following year, she landed the lead role in "How to Be Very, Very Popular," a role originally offered to Marilyn Monroe. This caused quite a stir, and the story even made the cover of "Life" magazine. Many film critics and historians consider Sherry's energetic and sparkling dance scene in the movie to be the most memorable. However, the studio's attempt to promote her as the "new Marilyn Monroe" was short-lived, as they soon became interested in another actress, Jayne Mansfield.

Later Career

After her contract with the studio ended in 1958, Sherry North continued to receive roles in films and various television productions such as "Gunsmoke," "The Virginian," "Breaking Point," and "Ben Casey." She also appeared in two medical dramas on ABC, "Breaking Point" and "Ben Casey." In the 1960s, she returned to Broadway and had a successful run in the musical "I Can Get It for You Wholesale" alongside Elliot Gould and Barbra Streisand. She went on to appear in films like "Charley Varrick" and "The Shootlist."

Later Life and Personal Life

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Sherry North continued to play guest roles in various television shows, including "Hawaii Five-O," "Matlock," "Magnum, P.I.," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," and "Golden Girls." In the early 1980s, she starred in the comedy series "I'm a Big Girl Now" on ABC. However, the show only lasted for nineteen episodes in the 1980-1981 season. In 1983, she appeared in Stephen Bochco's project "Bay City Blues."

Sherry North was married four times and had two children. Her first marriage was to Fred Bessire, and they had a daughter named Don. The marriage ended in 1953. In 1955, she married John Friedman, a music industry professional, but their marriage lasted only a year. Her third husband was psychologist Gerhardt Sommer, with whom she had another daughter. They divorced in 1963. Sherry's fourth husband, Phillip Norman, was separated from her by her untimely death.
