Early Career
Shinji Nakano was born on April 1, 1971, in Osaka, Japan. He began his racing career in karting, winning the Kansai Kartlend Championship in 1985. In 1987, he became the International Hong Kong Kart Grand Prix Champion and won the Japanese Karting Grand Prix.
Formula History
Nakano's formula racing career started in 1989 with the Japanese Formula 3 series. He finished 7th in his first season. In 1990, he moved to Europe, competing in the British Vauxhall-Lotus Championship and the European Opel-Lotus Championship.
In 1997, he joined Prost Grand Prix in Formula 1, after the team inherited the Ligier team. Nakano inherited his seat from Olivier Panis, who was a championship contender. However, Nakano struggled to keep up with his teammate, finishing 19th in the drivers' championship.
Prost Grand Prix
Despite his lack of success, Nakano remained with Prost Grand Prix for 1998, thanks to the insistence of engine supplier Mugen Honda. However, the team's reliance on Nakano strained the relationship with Mugen Honda, leading to a switch to Peugeot engines in 1998.
Nakano's presence in Prost Grand Prix contributed to the team's financial struggles in 2000. Nevertheless, he remains part of Formula 1 history as one of the drivers who competed for the Prost Grand Prix team in its inaugural season.
