The Life of Shintaro Tsuji, the Founder of Sanrio
Early Life and FamilyShintaro Tsuji was born into an affluent family in Kofu, Japan, on August 10, 1934. His family owned a flourishing restaurant and hotel business. Tragedy struck when Tsuji's mother succumbed to leukemia when he was just 13, leaving him to be raised by relatives.
Education and Black Market Venture
After graduating from high school, Tsuji enrolled in the Kiryu Technical College of Gumma University. During his time there, he partnered with friends to manufacture and sell soap and saccharin on the black market.
Government Service and Return to Business
Following his graduation, Tsuji secured a position as a civil servant in the local prefecture. After 11 years, he decided to venture back into business. However, his attempt to establish a liquor store in Tokyo failed due to his struggles with lifting heavy boxes.
Birth of the Gift-Giving Idea
Undeterred, Tsuji began contemplating a business that would foster friendship. He eventually settled on the idea of gifts, recognizing their ability to evoke joy and connection. On August 10, 1960, he founded Sanrio.
Creation of Sanrio and Hello Kitty
With a team of 20 designers, Tsuji embarked on creating characters that would become the foundation of Sanrio. In 1974, he introduced the iconic Hello Kitty, a white cat with a red bow.
Legacy and Impact
While Tsuji's son, Shintaro Tsuji Jr., formally leads Sanrio, the founder continues to exert significant influence over the company's operations. Sanrio's products, featuring Hello Kitty and other beloved characters, have achieved immense popularity throughout Asia and beyond.
