Sigiswald Kuijken:Master of Baroque and Romantic Music

Belgian Violinist, Violist, and Conductor

Sigiswald Kuijken, a renowned Belgian violinist, violist, and conductor, has left an indelible mark on the world of music. Born in Kortrijk, Belgium, in 1944, he began his musical journey at a young age.

Baroque Virtuoso

Kuijken's passion for baroque music led him to specialize in playing the baroque violin. From 1971 to 1996, he taught the art of baroque violin performance at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels.

La Petite Bande and Romantic Explorations

In 1972, Kuijken founded the baroque orchestra La Petite Bande, named after the ensemble conducted by Jean-Baptiste Lully. His expertise extended beyond baroque music, and in 1986 he established the Kuijken Quartet, a string quartet renowned for its interpretations of Romantic composers.

Collaboration and Recognition

Kuijken has collaborated extensively with his brothers Wieland and Barthold on various musical projects. His talent and dedication have earned him honorary doctorates from the Catholic University of Leuven in 2002 and the University of Ghent in 2015.
