Early Life and Education
Sergey Yakovlevich Kakabadze was born on July 31 (August 12), 1895, in the city of Tbilisi, Georgia. As a young man, he worked as a mechanic. After the October Revolution, he became involved in the arts at the studio of the renowned Georgian sculptor Michael Toizde.
Art Education
In 1922, Kakabadze enrolled in the Tbilisi Academy of Arts, initially studying painting but later switching to sculpture. He studied under the tutelage of the esteemed professor Yakov Nikoladze and graduated in 1930.
Artistic Career
Kakabadze's artistic style centered around monumental and portrait sculpture. He played a significant role in the development of Georgian Soviet art and contributed to the creation of numerous public monuments and sculptures.
Recognition and Legacy
Kakabadze's talent earned him the title of Distinguished Artist of the Georgian SSR. In 1941, he was awarded the prestigious Stalin Prize (Second Degree). He became a member of the Communist Party in 1930.
Teaching and Influence
From 1932 onwards, Kakabadze taught at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts, inspiring and mentoring generations of sculptors. His legacy as an educator and artist continues to shape the Georgian art scene.
