Simon Gallup, born June 1, 1960, is an English musician best known as the bassist for The Cure.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Despite a childhood devoid of musical aspirations, Gallup stumbled upon bass guitar after graduating high school and working at a plastics factory. He joined the local punk band Lockjaw, which later became The Magazine Spies.

Joining The Cure

In 1979, Gallup replaced Michael Dempsey as The Cure's bassist. He brought additional instrumental versatility, contributing on keyboards and occasionally playing guitar live.

Conflicts and Reconciliation

The band's progress was marred by a violent confrontation between Gallup and frontman Robert Smith during a 1982 concert. After an 18-month hiatus, the pair reconciled in 1985.

Post-Reconciliation Success

The reunited Cure became close-knit friends, with Gallup serving as Smith's best man at his wedding in 1988. The band released 13 albums, including several written by Gallup.
