Early Life and Influences
Sisqo's passion for music was ignited at an early age. As a five-year-old, he joined the choir at his local church. His musical tastes were shaped by R&B icons such as The Jackson 5, particularly Michael Jackson.
DRU HILL Formation and Rise to Fame (1990s)
At the age of 14, Sisqo partnered with James Green, Tamir Ruffin, and Larry Anthony to form the group DRU HILL. Their local radio play garnered attention, but it was a meeting with Black Island Music president Hiriam Hicks in 1995 that propelled the group to national recognition.
Subsequently, DRU HILL signed a record deal and released their debut single, "Tell Me," in August 1996. The song reached the top five of the R&B charts and went gold. Their self-titled album followed in November, selling over one million copies.
Their sophomore album, "Enter the Dru," released in October 1998, earned double-platinum status by May 1999. DRU HILL garnered numerous awards that year, including five at the Billboard Music Awards and two at the Soul Train Awards.
Solo Career Launch and Success
In late 1999, DRU HILL effectively disbanded, and its members signed solo deals with Def Soul. Among them, Sisqo stood out with his charisma, blonde hair, tattoos, and Michael Jackson-inspired dance moves.
His debut solo album, "Unleash the Dragon," released in November 1999, was largely written and produced by Sisqo himself. While its first single, "Got to Get It," enjoyed success, it was the follow-up single, "Thong Song," that catapulted the album to the number two spot on the Billboard Pop Chart and earned multi-platinum status.
Sisqo's sophomore solo album, "Return of the Dragon," was released in 2001.
