American actress Skyler Davenport may not have many well-known projects to her name yet, but her starring role in the thriller "See for Me" has brought her to the forefront.
Early Life and Career
Born Catherine Davenport on May 22, 1992, in Madison, Wisconsin, Skyler later legally changed their name and moved to Los Angeles, where they reside and work today. Known as a voice actress, Davenport has lent their talent to numerous anime characters and video games. They have expressed their enjoyment in the evolving complexity of the work and the increasing realism of games. Davenport's on-screen appearances have been sparse, including roles in the shows "Salem" and "NCIS: Los Angeles."
Personal Journey
Davenport has faced challenges in their personal life. Experiencing discomfort with their female body during adolescence, they underwent a double mastectomy at 18 to reshape their physique to be more androgynous. Two years later, the actress suffered a stroke caused by a rare hereditary condition known as hemiplegic migraine. The stroke resulted in blindness, although the condition is not immediately apparent in photographs or videos. Most people do not notice Davenport's disability until they disclose it themselves.
Currently, the Madison native identifies as non-binary, asexual, and uses the pronoun "they." They acknowledge that others may perceive them as female and are comfortable with that, as they underwent surgery solely for their own well-being. Davenport also has an autism spectrum disorder. They stand at 5'4" (163 cm).
"See for Me" and Beyond
Davenport's debut leading role came in the thriller "See for Me." The film follows a blind skier named Sophie, who is threatened by robbers. Her only chance of rescue is through an app that connects her with a volunteer (Jessica Parker Kennedy), who describes her surroundings via video call.
The search for the lead actress lasted nearly four years before casting agents came across Davenport. They underwent three auditions over a six-month period before landing the role. Upon arriving on set, Davenport familiarized themselves with only the living room and kitchen of the house where the thriller takes place, exploring the rest of the premises alongside their character, which they described as a cool and novel experience. Stunt doubles were used for certain scenes, such as those involving Sophie's skiing.
Filming commenced in 2020 but was interrupted by the pandemic. The movie premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City in 2021 and was released in Russia in late spring 2022.
Meanwhile, Davenport continues to work on their passion of voice acting for video games and anime. They hope that their on-screen debut will further their film career and are eager to tackle projects that do not center around vision impairment or disability. In jest, Davenport says they are not auditioning to play a driver in a "Fast and Furious" movie.
