Sonia Akow: A Tragic Battle with Leukemia

Sonia Akow, a 43-year-old resident of London, had a series of devastating losses in her life. In November 2012, she was diagnosed with leukemia, just a year after her mother, Bonita Akow, passed away from the same disease. Both women fought fiercely against this rare form of blood cancer, with odds of both mother and daughter succumbing to the illness being one in a million. Unfortunately, Sonia's battle with leukemia would end tragically, despite the support of her partner, Toby Edwards.

A Lifelong Partnership

Sonia and Toby had been inseparable since they first met 21 years ago in a London pub. They shared a passion for music and together became DJs, forming the duo SOTO. They traveled the world, performing in various countries and dreaming of one day settling down and starting a family. However, their dreams were put on hold when Sonia's mother was diagnosed with leukemia.

A Mother's Diagnosis

Shortly after Sonia and Toby purchased their new home, Sonia's mother, Bonita Akow, arrived in England with devastating news. She had been diagnosed with leukemia and her condition was rapidly deteriorating. Sonia stood by her mother's side throughout the 14 difficult months of her treatment. Bonita's physical weakness prevented her from receiving a stem cell transplant, but the treatment did extend her life.

A Shocking Diagnosis

Life seemed to be returning to normal for Sonia and Toby after Bonita's passing. They completed renovations on their house and hoped to start a family. However, Sonia's health took a sudden turn for the worse. She experienced extreme fatigue and weakness, unlike anything she had ever felt before. After several weeks of enduring these symptoms, Sonia visited her doctor, hoping for answers.

The diagnosis was devastating: leukemia. Sonia and Toby had witnessed firsthand the effects of this disease during Bonita's battle, and now they were faced with their own fight. Sonia's treatment began immediately, with the same healthcare professionals who had treated her mother. She endured three rounds of chemotherapy, but her best chance at survival was a stem cell transplant from a suitable donor.

A Difficult Search for a Donor

Due to the challenges of finding mixed-race donors, it was nearly impossible to find a matching donor for Sonia. However, after a long and arduous search, a suitable donor was found in Taiwan. Sonia underwent the transplant, and for a brief period, it seemed that her condition was improving. Unfortunately, complications arose, and Sonia suffered a massive stroke.

A Heartbreaking Decision

As Sonia lay in a coma, her condition deteriorated rapidly. Toby faced the agonizing decision to disconnect her from life support, as her prognosis was deemed incompatible with a normal life. Surrounded by loved ones, Sonia passed away peacefully in Toby's arms.

A Call for Donors

Today, one year after Sonia's death, Toby Edwards urges people to register as bone marrow donors to help others in their fight against leukemia. He believes that by expanding the registry, more lives can be saved and families can be spared the tragic loss that he experienced.
