Lyubomirsky completed her undergraduate studies in psychology at Harvard University in 1989. She went on to earn her doctorate in social psychology from Stanford University in 1994. Following her studies, she joined the faculty at the University of California, Riverside. She started as an assistant professor in the psychology department and later became an adjunct professor in 2001. In 2005, Lyubomirsky was promoted to a full professorship, a position she still holds today.
