Abdelraouf Derradji: Algerian MC

Abdelraouf Derradji, better known by his stage name Soolking, is an Algerian rapper, singer, and dancer who has made a name for himself with his unique blend of reggae, soul, hip-hop, and Algerian raï music.

Early Life and Influences

Born on December 10, 1989, in the Algiers suburb of Staoueli, Soolking began his artistic journey as a dancer and drummer. As a teenager, he performed with an amateur dance and music group and became a skilled acrobat.

Journey to France

In 2008, Soolking moved to France, where he initially faced financial challenges and even resorted to sleeping on the streets. He returned to Algeria briefly to join the rap group Africa Jungle, but in 2014, he returned to France and released an EP with his collaborators, Jam Shaw and N'as Doz.

Solo Career and Breakthrough

Soolking's solo career took off in 2016 when he signed with the label Affranchis Music, founded by Algerian-French rapper Sofiane. He gained initial success with tracks like "Milano" and "Guerrilla." His breakthrough came with the song "Dalida," which paid homage to the iconic singer and featured a sample from her song "Parole Parole."

Debut Album and Critical Acclaim

In 2018, Soolking released his debut album, "Fruit du démon," which achieved gold status in France. The singles "Guerrilla" and "Dalida" received platinum certifications, and the official music video for "Dalida" garnered over 196 million views on YouTube.

Concert Tragedy

On August 22, 2019, tragedy struck when a stampede occurred at Soolking's concert in Algiers. Five people, three men, and two women, died as a result of the incident. Over 20 people were injured and taken to the hospital. The concert continued despite the tragedy and was broadcast live on Algerian television. Soolking has not publicly addressed the incident.

Artistic Influences

Soolking cites manga and breakdancing as major influences on his music and dance. "Dance is my first love," he stated in a 2018 interview.
