British model Sophie Birch shares her heartbreaking story of a resort romance that turned into a nightmare when she discovered that her "fiancé" was already married. Birch, from Oldham, was 19 when she started dating 24-year-old bartender Sabri in the resort town of Altinkum in 2011. As their relationship progressed, Sabri became more demanding, asking Birch to quit her modeling career, stop drinking, and avoid wearing revealing clothes.
A Relationship Filled with Deceit
In 2013, after three weeks of dating, Sabri proposed that they have a child together, and Birch became pregnant. However, soon after, Sabri disappeared, and his family revealed that he was already married. Prior to their romance, Sabri had been a family friend for three years. Birch admits, "Honestly, I thought women who had resort romances with locals were careless. I would never have dated Sabri if I hadn't known him for so long."
A Rollercoaster of Emotions
Despite their distance, Birch and Sabri maintained a strong connection through Skype. Meanwhile, Birch worked part-time at a supermarket and pursued her modeling career. However, Sabri started criticizing her friends from the West, demanded more respect for Turkish culture, and accused Birch of excessive drinking, even though she didn't have a drinking habit. He then suggested she give up wearing shorts, dresses, and strappy tops, claiming she looked better in leggings and long tops. In May 2013, when Birch was supposed to return home, Sabri wrapped a scarf around her head, trying to make her resemble local women.

In October 2013, Birch flew back to Turkey, and Sabri arranged a romantic meeting in their hotel room. He surprised Birch by expressing his desire to become the father of her child. Birch recalls, "I thought all the sacrifices I had made for our relationship were worth it, and we were heading towards a happy ending. I was in love, and we decided to have a baby. Everything seemed perfect." However, the idyllic relationship quickly unraveled when Sabri disappeared from Facebook, stopped answering calls and emails. Worried for her fiancé's well-being, Birch contacted his family, only to discover that Sabri was already married.
A Tragic Loss and a New Beginning
Despite the end of her lifelong love, Birch was determined to keep her baby. Sadly, she suffered a miscarriage four months into her pregnancy, likely due to the stress she experienced. Sabri later admitted, "Sophie and I had a resort romance. She knew I would never marry an Englishwoman. Our cultures are too different. It wouldn't have worked, and I told her that from day one. I never loved her. I used to like her, but not anymore." Birch bravely shared her story to warn other women, saying, "I thought this would never happen to me. I knew Turkish men had a bad reputation, but I had known Sabri for several years, and I was convinced he was different. Unfortunately, I was wrong... I feel foolish, although now I am happy again. And I hope others will learn from my mistakes."
