Early Life and Education
Sultanmakhmut Toraigyrovwas born on October 1, 1878, in the Turgay region of Kazakhstan. He attended a Kazakh-Russian school founded by Ibrai Altynsarin and later enrolled in a teacher training course in Kostanay.
Teaching Career
Toraigyrov became a teacher and taught Russian language and literature to Kazakh children, following the pedagogical methods of his mentor, Altynsarin. He contributed to the establishment of new schools in rural villages.
Literary Works
Breakthrough with "Образцовый перевод"Toraigyrov's first book, "Образцовый перевод," was published in 1910. It contained translations of Ivan Krylov's fables and Toraigyrov's own original compositions.
First Kazakh Novel: "Калым"
In 1913, Toraigyrov published Kazakhstan's first novel, "Калым." This groundbreaking work critiqued the patriarchal society, exploitation of the poor, and oppression of women in rural communities.
Pedagogical and Social Contributions
Champion of EducationToraigyrov was an advocate for educational reform in Kazakhstan. He wrote numerous articles on child education and upbringing, and his pedagogical views were reflected in his scientific writings.
Member of the Communist Party
Toraigyrov became a member of the Communist Party in 1940. He played an active role in developing the Soviet education system in Kazakhstan.
Memoirist
"Сбывшиеся мечты": A Window into Kazakh HistoryToraigyrov's autobiography, "Сбывшиеся мечты," published in 1951, offers a firsthand account of pre-revolutionary Kazakh village life and the transformative changes brought about by Soviet rule.
Recognition and Legacy
Toraigyrov was awarded two Orders of Lenin for his contributions to Kazakh literature and education. He is remembered as a pioneer of Kazakh critical realism and an influential pedagogue who shaped the future generations of Kazakhstan.
