A Transgender American's Journey

Born as a female, Spencer Hanson, a 36-year-old fitness coach from Kansas City, Kansas, grew up in a conservative Christian household. Raised as Sarah, she always felt a disconnect with her assigned gender, but it wasn't until her adopted daughter came out that she found the courage to embrace her true identity.

A Life Defined by Gender Identity

Despite hiding her true self for years, Sarah acknowledged her same-sex attraction at 19 and later married a medical professional named Jess, who had two children from a previous relationship. As a transgender woman, Sarah experienced gender dysphoria, but fear of being ridiculed and shamed kept her silent.

A Moment of Strength

It was her adopted daughter, Bab, who at nine years old, helped Sarah realize the importance of being open about her gender identity. Bab's decision to transition to male gave Sarah the strength to acknowledge her own desire to become a man. After giving birth to her son, Cab, in 2013, and suffering a miscarriage in 2015, Sarah began testosterone therapy and underwent a hysterectomy and double mastectomy.

Coming to Terms with a New Reality

Sarah's journey was marked by both internal struggles and societal challenges. She faced the fear of losing her family and friends, as well as the stigma surrounding gender identity issues. However, Sarah's children have been a constant source of support, embracing her transition and continuing to address her as their father.

A Family United in Love

Today, Sarah and Jess live apart but maintain an amicable relationship. They have raised their children with a gender-neutral approach, fostering their children's self-discovery. Sarah's children, who have embraced progressive views, have stopped using the term "mom" and instead refer to her as "dad."

Embracing the True Self

Despite the difficulties she has faced, Sarah's story is a testament to the power of self-acceptance. Through her journey, she has found strength and love, proving that it is never too late to live an authentic life.
