Beijing Olympics and Beyond

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Gianniotis competed in both pool and open water events. He finished outside the medal contention in the 400m and 1500m freestyle, but placed 16th in the 10km marathon in open water.

World Championship Titles

In the following years, Gianniotis emerged as a dominant force in open water swimming. He became world champion in the 10km event in 2011 in Shanghai and successfully defended his title in 2013 in Barcelona. He also earned world silver medals in the 5km event in 2011 and in the team competition in 2013.

Olympic Performance in Open Water

Gianniotis continued to compete at the Olympics in open water swimming. He narrowly missed the podium with a fourth-place finish in the marathon event at the 2012 London Games.

Later Career and Retirement

In 2015, at the age of 35, Gianniotis won another world bronze medal in the 10km event in Kazan. He retired from competitive swimming shortly after, having left an indelible mark on the sport of both pool and open water swimming.
