Early Life and Education
Shridhar Tayur was born in India in 1965 and completed his undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 1986. He earned his Ph.D. in operations research and industrial engineering from Cornell University in 1990.

Academic Career
In 1991, Tayur joined Carnegie Mellon University's Graduate School of Industrial Administration (now Tepper School of Business) as an assistant professor and became a full professor in 1998. He has made significant contributions to inventory theory, supply chain management, operational strategy, and healthcare management.

Academic Innovations
Tayur is recognized for developing new algorithms for stochastic inventory theory models and for discrete optimization using algebraic geometry and Gröbner basis theory. His work has been published in top academic journals such as Operations Research, Management Science, Mathematics of Operations Research, and Queueing Systems.
Book and Recognition
He co-authored the popular textbook "Quantitative Models for Supply Chain Management," one of the leading references in supply chain modeling. Fortune magazine named Tayur one of its "Four Masters of Supply Chain Efficiency," and BusinessWeek called him a "rock star professor."
Entrepreneurship
In 2000, Tayur founded SmartOps, a software development company. In 2011, he launched OrganJet, which transports patients needing organ transplants. OrganJet's motto, "If you cannot bring the organs to the patients, why not bring the patients to the organs? That's a great idea," reflects Tayur's innovative approach to problem-solving.
Philanthropy and Media
Through his family foundation, RAGS Family Foundation, Tayur has supported several documentaries, including "Journey to Normal," and independent films at the Silk Screen Asian American Film Festival. He also endowed the annual People's Choice Award. Both SmartOps and RAGS Foundation sponsored the documentary "The American Revolution," exploring the political and cultural shifts of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Social Activism
Tayur serves as a policy advisor to Polaris Project, a non-profit organization fighting modern-day slavery and human trafficking.
