The Hate Crime that Shocked the Nation
A Senseless TragedyOn February 22, 2017, a 51-year-old U.S. Navy veteran named Adam Purinton entered Austin's Bar & Grill in Olathe, Kansas, and opened fire on two Indian men, killing 32-year-old Srinivas Kuchibhotla and injuring two others. According to witnesses, Purinton shouted, "Get out of my country," before unleashing gunfire.

The Victims
Srinivas Kuchibhotla, an aeronautical engineer, died from his injuries at the hospital. His coworker and friend, 32-year-old Alok Madasani, was treated and released. The third victim, 24-year-old Ian Grillot, a patron at Austin's, attempted to intervene and was shot in the chest and hand.

The Hero
Despite being seriously injured, Grillot lunged at Purinton to subdue him. He believed Purinton had run out of ammunition, but was shot again, narrowly missing his carotid artery. Grillot spent the night in the hospital, praying for the two Indian victims.

The Accused
Purinton was arrested in Clinton, Missouri, and charged with first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder. He had a history of traffic violations, including speeding and drunk driving.

The Investigation
Law enforcement initially hesitated to classify the shooting as a hate crime, opting instead to investigate all possible motives. However, the family of Srinivas Kuchibhotla insisted that the shooting was the result of an atmosphere of fear and xenophobia in America.
International Response
Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj condemned the shooting and offered assistance to Kuchibhotla's family. The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi issued a statement expressing condolences and reaffirming the nation's commitment to welcoming immigrants.
The Aftermath
Alok Madasani's father expressed concern over the safety of Indian immigrants in the United States, urging parents to reconsider sending their children there. The shooting prompted a national conversation about hate crimes and the need for tolerance and acceptance.
