Biography of Stanley Baker

William Stanley Baker, known as Stanley Baker, was an English actor and producer. He was born in 1928 in Ferndale, Rhondda Valley, Wales. His career in the film industry began after his service in the army from 1946 to 1948. Although Baker made his film debut in the early 1940s with the movie "Undercover", it was his role in "All Over the Moon" in 1949 that marked the beginning of his true career.

Baker had a ruggedly handsome appearance, which some might consider intimidating. However, this did not hinder his popularity with female audiences, as he was a heartthrob in the 1950s. From his childhood, Baker displayed a wild and passionate nature, which was recognized and nurtured by his teacher, leading him towards a career in acting. Interestingly, his fellow Welsh actor Richard Burton was a close friend of Baker, and their destinies and even personalities were quite similar. They first found themselves on stage together in their youth in Cardiff, Wales.

During the first half of the 1950s, Baker appeared in films such as the British war drama "The Cruel Sea", the American action film "Knights of the Round Table", the joint Italian-American project "Helen of Troy", and many others. He had no shortage of roles offered to him. In the second half of the 1950s, Baker began to receive leading roles in films such as "Campbell's Kingdom", "Hell Drivers", "Yesterday's Enemy", "The Angry Hills", and "Blind Date". Many of his films during this period were centered around war, where his stern appearance suited the genre perfectly.

It is known that in 1961, Baker turned down the role of James Bond in the film "Dr. No" because he did not want to commit to a three-picture contract. It is also possible that he regretted this decision later, as in the same year, he requested a role from producer Albert R. Broccoli in one of his films. However, Baker is best known for his portrayal of Lieutenant John Chard in the 1964 historical adventure film "Zulu". It is worth noting that Baker also served as a producer for this film, which depicted the fierce battle between 140 Welsh soldiers and 4,000 Zulu warriors during the Anglo-Zulu War and the cost of victory for the former. He established his own production company, which he later sold, and produced several films, including "Zulu".

In the 1970s, Baker continued to actively work in film, appearing in "The Last Grenade", "Perfect Friday", "Lucertola con la pelle di donna, Una", and many others. In 1975, he starred alongside Alain Delon in the Franco-Italian film "Zorro". Unfortunately, in 1976, Baker was diagnosed with cancer. He passed away on June 28, 1976, in Malaga, Spain at the age of 48. His final film appearance was in the TV series "How Green Was My Valley" in 1976. Baker left behind his wife, Ellen Martin, whom he had been with since 1950, and their four children.
