Early Life and Education

Dr. Mehmed Esat was born in Adrianople, Turkey, in the 18th century. He received his initial education in Cyzicus, a prominent city in Northwest Anatolia.

Medical Training in Italy

In 1809, Dr. Esat traveled to Italy for advanced studies in science and mathematics. He enrolled at the University of Pisa, where he eventually shifted his focus to medicine. In 1819, he graduated with a doctorate in medicine.

Return to Adrianople and Educational Reforms

Upon returning to his homeland, Dr. Esat took over the management of a local school in Adrianople in 1819. Under his leadership, the school underwent a transformation into a gymnasium. However, in 1824, he left his teaching position to pursue his medical career in Constantinople.

Imperial Physician and Medical Educator

In Constantinople, Dr. Esat served as personal physician to Sultan Mahmud II from 1827 onwards. After the sultan's death in 1839, he continued to serve as the imperial physician for Sultan Abdulmejid from 1828 to 1861. During this time, he played a significant role in establishing the Imperial Medical School, where he taught zoology and botany in French and Turkish for over 14 years.

Legacy and Contributions

Dr. Mehmed Esat's pioneering efforts in medicine and education left a lasting legacy on the development of medical science in Turkey. His reforms at the Imperial Medical School helped to modernize medical education and train a new generation of physicians. As a renowned physician, he provided invaluable medical care to the ruling elite of the Ottoman Empire and contributed to the advancement of medical knowledge.
