American Ballerina Struggles After Devastating Bahamas Boat Explosion
A 22-year-old American ballerina, Stephanie Schaffer, is facing a life-changing challenge after a tragic boat explosion in the Bahamas left her without her legs.
The Accident
On June 30, 2018, Schaffer was one of 12 passengers on a tourist boat that exploded near Great Exuma. The blast killed one American and injured nine others, including Schaffer, her mother, sister, and stepfather.
Critical Condition
Schaffer sustained severe injuries, including broken bones and internal organ damage. She underwent double amputation below the knees and is currently in a medically-induced coma in Nassau Hospital. Her uncle, Brian Schaffer, expressed deep concern about her condition, saying, "I don't think she knows she has no legs."
Family Trauma
Schaffer's family members also suffered injuries in the explosion. Her sister, Brooke, and stepfather, Paul Bender, sustained minor injuries. Their mother, however, broke several bones and is believed to have internal bleeding.
Fundraiser and Support
A GoFundMe page has been established to help the family cover medical expenses resulting from the tragedy. Friends and family have offered an outpouring of support and prayers for Schaffer's recovery.
Loss and Remembrance
The explosion also claimed the life of 39-year-old Maleka Grimes. Her husband, Tyron Jackson, was airlifted to a hospital in Fort Lauderdale in critical condition.
Investigation Underway
The Royal Bahamas Police Force, Fire Services, and Civil Aviation Department are conducting a thorough investigation into the explosion and fire. The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism has expressed its condolences and is monitoring the progress of the investigation.
