Stepan Timofeyevich Anisimov: A Hero of the Soviet Union
Early Life and Military ServiceStepan Timofeyevich Anisimov was born on March 15, 1910, in Poltavo-Zvonarevsky, Russian Empire, to a peasant family. After receiving a basic education, he worked as a factory worker and later as a workshop manager at the Stalingrad Machine and Tractor Station. In October 1942, Anisimov was drafted into the Red Army and joined the Great Patriotic War in 1943.
Heroics at the Dnieper Crossing
Serving as a telephone operator in the 7th Guards Mechanized Brigade, Anisimov played a pivotal role in crossing the Dnieper River near Kaniv, Ukraine, in September 1943. Along with forward groups, he established a telephone line between the battalion's command and observation post and the infantry and artillery batteries.
Under heavy enemy fire, Anisimov repeatedly repaired the line, ensuring uninterrupted communication. He also spotted an enemy group of up to 20 soldiers attempting to sneak behind Soviet lines. Anisimov eliminated the threat with his submachine gun and grenades, capturing their radio. Despite being wounded, he maintained communication for several more hours.
Recognition and Later Life
For his exceptional valor and skill, Anisimov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on April 24, 1944. He also received the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal.
After the war, Anisimov was demobilized and settled in the hero city of Volgograd, where he continued to work until his passing on June 11, 1972. His legacy as a courageous and selfless soldier remains an inspiration to this day.
