The Alpinist with No Arms and One Leg

Early Life and Climbing Passion

Stephen Ball, a 54-year-old British mountaineer from Cumbria, discovered his love for climbing in his youth. He never imagined that his passion would be cut short.

Tragic Accident on Mount McKinley

In 1999, Ball's life took a dramatic turn during a climb on Mount McKinley, one of America's highest peaks. He fell over 1,900 feet, landing in an icy crevasse where he remained trapped for hours. The accident resulted in severe injuries, including frostbite to his hands and feet, a broken nose, and multiple fractures.

Amputations and the Path Forward

As a result of the injuries, doctors were forced to amputate Ball's left arm, all but two fingers on his right hand, part of his nose, and a portion of his right leg. His left leg was also amputated later due to 12 fractures. Despite these life-altering setbacks, Ball remained determined to return to the mountains.

Collaboration with a Prosthetic Virtuoso

Ball sought the expertise of Phil Myers, a renowned prosthetic technician. Together, they developed innovative prosthetic ice axes that extended from Ball's forearms. Ball actively participated in the design process, ensuring the instruments met the specific demands of mountaineering.

Overcoming Challenges

While Ball had initially consulted Myers for a leg prosthesis, their collaboration began with the design of the prosthetic arms. These were later followed by the development of specialized leg prostheses that allowed Ball to continue his climbing endeavors.

Recognition and Gratitude

Myers' exceptional skills have earned him numerous awards. However, his greatest satisfaction comes from the gratitude of patients like Ball, for whom he creates custom-made prostheses that empower them to overcome their physical challenges.

Return to the Mountains

Thanks to Myers' expertise, Ball has defied expectations and continues to pursue his passion for climbing. The mountains continue to beckon him, and he remains eager to conquer new heights despite his physical limitations.
