Biography of Steve Garvey

Steve Garvey is a British rock musician who is best known as the former bass guitarist of the punk band 'Buzzcocks'. He was born on January 8, 1958, in Manchester, England. Garvey joined 'Buzzcocks' in late 1977, replacing bassist Garth Smith shortly after the release of their single 'Orgasm Addict'. He was a member of the band's classic lineup from 1977 to 1981 and again from 1989 to 1992.

Early Career and 'Buzzcocks'

Before joining 'Buzzcocks', Garvey worked as a gas station attendant. He played bass guitar for the band during the height of the punk rock era and contributed to the creation of their first three albums, 'Another Music In A Different Kitchen', 'Love Bites', and 'A Different Kind of Tension', as well as the famous compilation album 'Singles Going Steady'. In 1981, the band announced their breakup.

The Teardrops and 'Bok Bok'

From 1978 to 1980, Garvey also played with 'The Teardrops', his old school band, alongside Karl Burns from 'The Fall', Martin Bramah, and Tony Friel. 'The Teardrops' released two EPs, 'In And Out Of Fashion' and 'Leave Me No Choice', a single titled 'Seeing Double' in 1979, and the album 'Final Vinyl' in 1980. After the album's release, the band changed their name to 'Bok Bok' and released the single 'Come Back To Me' with the song 'Misfit' on the B-side.

Solo Work and 'Motivation'

Following the breakup of 'Buzzcocks' in 1981, Garvey continued working with his bandmates and friends. He collaborated with vocalist and guitarist Pete Shelley on his debut solo album 'Homosapien' and recorded the EP '50 Years Of Comparative Wealth' with guitarist Steve Diggle in 1981. In 1981, Garvey formed the band 'Motivation' with vocalist Dave Price, guitarist Dave Rowbotham, and drummer Snuff. The band later changed its name to 'Shy Talk' and signed a contract with Columbia Records in the United States, releasing one album before Garvey's departure.

Later Years and Personal Life

In recent years, Garvey joined the post-punk band 'Blue Orchids' as a bass player and performed with German singer Nico from 'The Velvet Underground'. He produced the single 'Just Wanna Stay Free' by 'Private Sector' in 1979 and some works by 'Night Visitors' at 'Graveyard Studios' in Prestwich.

In 1989, 'Buzzcocks' reunited, but Garvey left the band in 1992 due to health problems, including a malignant tumor on his cheek, which he successfully overcame. Since 1993, Steve Garvey has been living in New Hope, Pennsylvania, and previously had an apartment in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York.

In the 2000s, he founded the label and production company 'New Hope Sound and Vision' and produced several local bands, including 'James Sewardalso Damn River', 'Inbred', 'Behn Wolfe', 'Less Pain Forever', as well as his eldest son's videos.

Garvey is married to Debra, and they have two sons, Kyle (born in 1990) and Ian (born in 1987). His cousin, Tony McGuinness, is a former bass guitarist of the Irish band 'Aslan'.
