Biography of Steve Chase
Steve Chase was born in Batavia, New York in 1950. In his childhood, Steve was interested in sports, participating in baseball, American football, and basketball. He also had a fascination with other team sports. In 1972, Steve graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry. It was during his time in university that Steve developed an interest in international business and Russia. He studied Russian while serving in the US Army and during his education at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, although he jokes that he was never a spy. In 1978, while still in Monterey, Steve earned a Master's degree in International Management from the Institute of International Studies. He is fluent in English, Russian, and German.
Joining Intel Corporation
Steve Chase joined Intel Corporation when it was still a small company with an annual revenue of only $250 million. Over the course of two years, Steve learned about manufacturing processes and Intel's work with clients around the world. Since 1982, Steve has worked in various sales and marketing positions at Intel's European headquarters. In 1991, he became involved in the establishment of Intel's business in Russia and other CIS countries and became the official regional representative for Intel in the former Soviet Union in 1993.
Challenges in Russia
Steve recalls the difficult times with nostalgia. The economy of the former Soviet Union was in ruins, science-intensive industries were left to fate, talented Russian engineers were at a loss, and there was a lack of managers and marketing specialists. In such conditions, Intel's entry into Russia was seen as a doomed project by a small group of enthusiasts with illusions about a market that practically didn't exist at the time. As Steve admits, Intel Corporation did not expect to achieve great success in Russia. They faced daily hardships - no employees or office, no clients, and communication difficulties. However, the first success came, and the first Russian employees appeared, those who had truly sound ideas about what needed to be done. Intel programs were implemented, albeit with consideration for Russian realities.
Contributions and Achievements
Over the course of 14 years, Intel Corporation has become deeply integrated into the IT industry in Russia and other CIS countries, acting as a catalyst for the development of many market segments. From the mid-1997, Steve Chase also took responsibility for Central and Eastern European markets, including Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and others. From 1999 to 2001, Steve held senior positions at Intel, overseeing sales and marketing in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
In 2002, Steve returned to Russia as the President of Intel in Russia and immediately began actively involving local specialists in advanced hardware and software development. Thanks to Steve's efforts, today there are 1000 Russian engineers and programmers conducting world-class research in R&D laboratories in Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Sarov, and St. Petersburg. The products created by Intel can rightfully be described as "Made in Russia." Steve Chase is married and has three daughters. His constant travels between Santa Clara (where Intel's headquarters are located), Munich (the location of the European office), and Moscow prevent him from staying at home with his family for long periods of time, although he rightly considers family to be his main value and pride.
