Early Life and Education

Steven Kloves was born in Austin, Texas. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles, but did not graduate.

Early Career as a Screenwriter

Kloves' first produced screenplay was "Racing with the Moon" (1984). He subsequently wrote screenplays for several other films, and also directed two of them. However, none of these projects gained significant attention.

Hiatus and Return to Screenwriting

In the mid-1990s, Kloves took a break from screenwriting. He returned in the late 1990s to adapt Michael Chabon's novel "The Wonder Boys" for the screen. This adaptation (released in 2000) earned Kloves critical acclaim and nominations for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe.

The Harry Potter Films

After the success of "The Wonder Boys," Warner Brothers approached Kloves with a list of properties the studio was considering adapting into films. Kloves was drawn to the first book in the Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone." The film adaptation was released in 2001. Kloves wrote the screenplays for all of the films in the series except the fifth, including the two-part "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."
