Steve Cunningham, an American professional boxer, made his debut in the cruiserweight division in October 2000. Initially, he fought in low-profile bouts until 2002 when he defeated Ghanaian boxer Joseph Awinongya. In 2004, Cunningham achieved a notable victory over South African Sebastian Rothmann, paving the way for significant advancements in his career.

In 2005, Cunningham prevailed over Guillermo Jones in a controversial split decision. He then defeated former world champion Kelvin Davis in an IBF eliminator in 2006.
