Biography of Stephen Gerald Wright

Stephen Gerald Wright, also known as the 'Suffolk Strangler', is an English serial killer who is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of five English prostitutes. He was born in the village of Erpingham, Norfolk, as the second of four children to Conrad Wright, a military policeman, and his wife Patricia, a veterinary nurse. When Stephen was just eight years old, his mother left the family, although Conrad and Patricia officially divorced in 1977. Stephen, his brother David, and their sisters Jeanette and Tina stayed with their father, who remarried later on.

In 1974, Stephen dropped out of school and joined the merchant navy, working on ferry crossings from the port of Felixstowe in Suffolk. In 1978, he married Angela O'Donovan, and they had a son named Michael. However, their marriage ended in divorce in 1987. Stephen went on to pursue various professions, including flight steward, bartender, and truck driver. It appears that his murderous tendencies began to emerge in the 1980s, as a former prostitute named Lindi St Clair claimed to have been attacked by him.

In 1987, Stephen married for the second time, this time to Diane Cassell. However, their marriage lasted only a year. He then had an affair with Sarah Whiteley, who gave birth to his daughter in 1992. Stephen's personal life was characterized by heavy drinking and gambling, which resulted in significant debts. He even attempted suicide on at least two occasions.

In 2001, Stephen met Pamela Wright, who shared the same last name but was not related to him. They began living together in Ipswich in 2004. Stephen was open about his involvement with prostitutes, a habit he developed during his time as a sailor. In Ipswich, he frequently visited local brothels disguised as saunas and massage parlors. Some of the women he encountered in these establishments became his victims.

At one point, Stephen had to work night shifts, during which he temporarily refrained from engaging with prostitutes. However, in the last three months of 2006, he resumed his activities and committed the five murders he was convicted for. He was arrested in 2008 and found guilty on February 21st. The following day, he received a life sentence, with the judge emphasizing that he should never be released.

On March 19, 2008, Stephen initially expressed his intention to file an appeal but later abandoned the idea. Investigators still suspect that he may be responsible for more murders. One particularly intriguing case linked to Stephen's name is the disappearance of Suzy Lamplugh. Lamplugh and Wright worked together on the ocean liner 'Queen Elizabeth 2' in the early 1980s. The last confirmed sighting of Suzy was in 1986, and she was officially declared dead in 1994, although her body was never found. The police considered Stephen as one of the prime suspects in her case but was unable to gather sufficient evidence against him.
