Biography of Stoyan Delchev
Stoyan Delchev, a Bulgarian gymnast, was born in 1959 in Plovdiv. He started practicing gymnastics at the age of seven and trained under the guidance of Nikola Nikolov from 1972. He served in the army and graduated from the National Sports Academy. After leaving competitive sports, he settled in the United States and currently works as a coach at his own school, Deltchev Gymnastics, in Reno, Nevada.
Sporting Career
Delchev made his international debut in 1977 at the European Championships in Vilnius, where he became the first in the parallel bars event. At the age of 16, he competed in the Olympics in Montreal but did not reach the podium.
Two years later, at the World Championships in Strasbourg, Stoyan Delchev won two bronze medals in the pommel horse and parallel bars events. The following year brought him a golden success as he became the overall champion at the European Championships, winning gold in floor exercises, silver in parallel bars, and bronze in vault. He became the first European overall champion under the age of 20.
The peak of his career came at the Moscow Olympics, where Delchev achieved third place in the all-around competition and performed brilliantly on the parallel bars. He retired from competitive gymnastics at the age of 23.
