He was born in Noranda, Quebec to his mother, Marie Sylvia (Ledingham), who worked as a nurse in the intensive care center, and his father, Hugh John Greenwood, who was a geophysicist and a professor at Princeton University. He has two sisters named Kelly Louise and Barbara Lynn.
