Early Life and Education

Sudhir Gupta, a Dutch and Russian entrepreneur of Indian descent, was born into humble beginnings in India. A diligent student, he pursued further education in the then-Soviet Union after receiving a national scholarship. In 1983, he graduated with a degree in chemical engineering from Patrice Lumumba University of Peoples' Friendship in Moscow.

Entrepreneurial Beginnings in Singapore

Instead of completing his postgraduate studies, Gupta traveled to Tokyo for an internship. Inspired by his experiences in Southeast Asia, which had close economic ties to the Soviet Union, he ventured into business. In 1987, he established Amtel, a company in Singapore that supplied natural rubber to the USSR.

Diversification and Focus on Tires

After the collapse of the Soviet economic system, bartering with Russian tire companies became unprofitable. Gupta pivoted his business activities to the Netherlands, where he registered Amtel Holdings Holland. However, he maintained a presence in Russia, engaging in ventures such as computer component importation, beverage production, and banking. By 1998, Gupta had consolidated his efforts on the tire business.

Amtel-Vredestein Holding

In the late 1990s, Gupta embarked on the creation of a tire holding company. Amtel gradually acquired a portfolio of companies in Russia, Ukraine, and the Netherlands. In 1999-2002, Gupta gained control over key Russian assets, managed by the company Amtelshinprom. The acquisition of Dutch tire manufacturer Vredestein Banden in 2005 led to the rebranding of the holding as Amtel-Vredestein.

Leadership and Expansion

Until August 2007, Gupta served as Chairman of the Board of Amtel-Vredestein. His leadership oversaw the company's growth and expansion. In early 2007, Gupta announced plans to venture into real estate development in Russia, partnering with Ascott Group.

Ambassadorship and Legacy

In recognition of his contributions, Gupta was appointed Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Singapore. He holds a Doctorate in Agricultural Sciences and continues to be an influential figure in the global business community. Gupta's entrepreneurial spirit and tireless efforts have left a significant mark on the tire industry and beyond.
