Early Life and EducationSue Myrick, born on August 1, 1941, in Tiffin, Ohio, graduated from high school in Port Clinton, Ohio. She pursued her higher education at Heidelberg University in Tiffin.
Early Career and Entry into Politics
Myrick began her career teaching Sunday school before transitioning to advertising and public relations. She became the President and CEO of Myrick Advertising and Public Relations and Myrick Enterprises. In 1981, Myrick's political journey commenced when she became a member of the Charlotte City Council.
Mayor of Charlotte (1987-1991)
In 1987, Myrick made history as the first female Mayor of Charlotte. She served two terms, during which she faced controversy surrounding an extramarital affair that began in 1973. Myrick's tenure as mayor was marked by various accomplishments.
U.S. House of Representatives (1994-2012)
After an unsuccessful bid for the U.S. Senate in 1992, Myrick secured a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1994. She represented North Carolina's 9th Congressional District and won re-election multiple times with significant margins. Myrick announced her retirement from Congress on February 7, 2012.
Conservative Legacy and Advocacy for Cancer Patients
As a conservative member of the House, Myrick consistently supported conservative policies and causes. Having faced breast cancer herself, she became an advocate for expanding insurance coverage for breast cancer patients. Myrick voiced her opposition to the sale of six U.S. East Coast ports to the Emirati company DP World in 2006.
