A Life-Changing AccidentOn a fateful day in March 2008, Sue Wright's life took a dramatic turn when she was struck by a reckless van driver while walking on the pavement. The impact left her with a severe brain injury and the eventual amputation of her left leg above the knee.
Finding a New Path: Diving
Despite the devastating setback, Sue refused to let adversity define her. In a determined effort to regain some semblance of her former active life, she sought solace in diving. After joining a diving club and completing her first lesson in a snowy pool, Sue's passion for the underwater world ignited.
Conquering Challenges
Under the guidance of her supportive instructor, Nigel Ealand, Sue tackled the challenges of submerging herself with a limb difference. Her compromised center of gravity and weaker shoulder muscles presented obstacles, but she persevered with unwavering determination.
Unwavering Support
Ealand, who had never worked with a physically disabled diver before, found himself improvising and adapting instructions to accommodate Sue's unique needs. Sue's exceptional attitude and resilience impressed him, and he became a staunch advocate for her dream.
Ambitious Plans: Drake Passage
Sue's ambition knows no bounds. Her goal is to become the first person with an amputation to swim across the Drake Passage from Argentina to Antarctica and back. This audacious undertaking is part of the Jubilee Sailing Trust's charitable mission.
