Early Life and EducationBorn as Suzanne Kaaren in Brooklyn, New York in 1912, Kaaren excelled in sports as a student at Erasmus Hall High School. Despite her athletic prowess and aspirations to participate in the 1932 Olympics, her parents forbade her from competing. Kaaren continued her education at Hunter College.
Hollywood Years
In 1933, Kaaren entered the world of acting by signing a contract with 20th Century Fox. Her initial salary of $150 per week marked the start of her Hollywood journey. Despite minor roles in the late 1930s, her breakthrough came in 1940 with the horror film "The Devil Bat." However, the role did not propel her to stardom, and her film career gradually diminished.
Theatrical Success
In contrast to her film career, Kaaren found success on stage. She performed on Broadway and in various theaters throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. She often shared the stage with her husband, acclaimed actor Sidney Blackmer, whom she married in 1943. Their two sons, Brewster and Jonathan, also pursued acting careers.
Later Life and Legacy
After Blackmer's passing in 1973, Kaaren moved to an apartment in Manhattan. In the 1990s, she faced eviction from her home when Donald Trump attempted to redevelop the building. Thanks to a court ruling, she remained in her residence and later received compensation for her relocation. Suzanne Kaaren passed away in Englewood, New Jersey in 2004 at the age of 92 due to complications from pneumonia.
Throughout her career, Kaaren displayed versatility and determination both on screen and stage. Her legacy as a multi-talented performer continues to inspire aspiring actors and actresses to this day.
