Biography of Sybille Bammer
IntroductionSybille Bammer is an Austrian tennis player who was ranked as high as 19th in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) singles rankings. She had a successful tennis career, winning several significant matches. Bammer is also known as one of the 'WTA mothers' as she continued to compete on the court even after giving birth to her daughter in 2001.
Early Career
Bammer made her debut in a WTA Tour tournament in 2000 at Klagenfurt. She attempted to qualify for the main draw at Wimbledon and the US Open, but was unsuccessful. In 2001, Bammer took a break from tennis to give birth to her daughter Tina. During this time, her partner Christophe Gsthwendtner took care of their child. Despite not achieving a high ranking yet, Bammer managed to break into the top 150 two years later.
Breakthrough
After returning from her maternity leave, Bammer achieved her first major victory by winning the Grenoble tournament. She went on to win two more tournaments. In 2003, she added four $25k tournament victories to her record and made her debut in the Austrian Fed Cup team. The real breakthrough for Bammer came in 2005 when she entered the top 100 rankings for the first time and reached the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. That year, she also reached her first two quarterfinals in WTA Tour competitions. By the end of the year, Bammer was ranked 77th in the world.
Continued Success
In her first appearance in the main draw of the US Open in 2005, Bammer was eliminated in the first round. However, at the beginning of 2006, she achieved significant improvement by reaching the third round of the Australian Open and the semifinals of the Pattaya WTA Tour. Bammer's first appearance in the main draw of Wimbledon also ended in the third round. By that time, she had risen to the top 50 in the rankings. She then had a series of relatively unsuccessful performances in the United States, ending the year ranked 53rd.
Ups and Downs
Bammer started 2007 with a loss to Martina Hingis at the Gold Coast tournament, but just a week later, she defeated Serena Williams. She was eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open. However, she quickly bounced back by winning her first WTA Tour tournament in February. By the start of the French Open, Bammer was already ranked 25th and reached the fourth round before losing to Justine Henin. This performance helped her climb to 22nd in the rankings. She also reached the fourth round of the US Open that year and finished the season as the top-ranked Austrian player, occupying the 19th position in the world rankings.
Later Career
Bammer's 19th ranking remained her personal best, and she was unable to surpass it. Despite this, she had several notable victories, including reaching the quarterfinals of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the US Open. Unfortunately, she struggled in Grand Slam tournaments after 2009, never progressing beyond the second round. In 2011, Bammer officially retired from professional tennis, concluding her successful career on the court.
