Birth and Family

Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz was born on January 3, 1946, in the village of Odelsk, Grodno District, Grodno Region, Belarus. His parents, Ignacy and Anna Kondrusiewicz, were ethnic Poles. Tadeusz had a sister, Maria Burow.

Early Life and Education

Kondrusiewicz initially studied physics and mathematics at Grodno Pedagogical Institute. However, he left due to accusations of frequent church attendance. In 1970, he graduated with honors from the energy engineering faculty of the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute.

Kondrusiewicz later decided to pursue a career in the Catholic priesthood. He studied at Kaunas Theological Seminary, graduating with honors in 1981. In 1985, he obtained a licentiate in theology. He further earned a doctorate in theology in 1988.

Engineering and Invention

From 1970 to 1976, Kondrusiewicz worked as an engineer at the Vilnius Grinding Machine Plant in Vilnius, Lithuania. As part of a team of engineers, he invented a high-speed grinding machine for the Volga Automobile Plant.

Career in the Catholic Church

Ordination and Early Ministry:

On May 31, 1981, Kondrusiewicz was ordained a priest. He served as a vicar in the Church of Saint Teresa in Vilnius and the Chapel of Our Lady of Mercy from 1981 to 1986.

Apostolic Administrator of Minsk:

On July 25, 1989, Pope John Paul II appointed Kondrusiewicz as Titular Bishop of Hippone-Zarytus and Apostolic Administrator of the Minsk Diocese.

Archbishop of Moscow:

On April 13, 1991, Kondrusiewicz was named Archbishop, Apostolic Administrator for Latin-rite Catholics of the European Part of Russia (from 1999, for Latin-rite Catholics of the Northern European Part of Russia). In 2002, he became Archbishop-Metropolitan of the newly established Archdiocese of the Mother of God in Moscow.

Position on 2020 Presidential Elections and Ban from Belarus

In August 2020, Kondrusiewicz criticized the results of the presidential elections in Belarus and called for dialogue between protesters and authorities. He accused the authorities of violence and bloodshed.

On August 31, 2020, Kondrusiewicz was denied entry into Belarus. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko claimed that Kondrusiewicz committed fraud by concealing his foreign citizenship and was involved in activities against the Belarusian state.
